Dolly Customizations?

So today I had the tiny chat and a lot of people were suggesting I start fixing up dolls for people. So I thought it might be fun to start a customization business. You send me your doll with a filled out form (I'd supply it) explaining your customization and perhaps a picture if you'd like o draw one, and then I can customize your doll for you! The price would range between what "procedures" would need to be done (Eye swap, wig swap, cleaning, creating an outfit, repainting and even maybe dying if I learn how) and it would be totally custom for you! I'm not sure how it would be set up yet but maybe a tab on this blog or something? You'd have to pay for the supplies, such as a new wig, as well. Anyway tell me what you think about the idea! Thanks!
Ali

  5. That would be awesome! You might want to get a P.O. box if you don`t have one already so it would keep people from going to your house or something like that... and I have adoll you could do! She is a old JLY and had a ripped body from my dog and so I let my sister play with her and she spilled juice on her.. I think she would mke a great he with a new body, eyes (they just look wierd and aren`t stuck) and wig! I would like to know how long it will take and how much would it cost.

  10. I probably wouldn't advise you to do the eyeswaps. Unless you've done a LOT of them and are really good at it, I wouldn't do it. You could ruin someone's doll and it could end up costing you a lot. Sounds like a great idea though! I say go for it.

  20. As someone who customizes dolls for a commission... I would say that before you start taking dolls from other people for commission, do several yourself, and take EXCELLENT pictures of your work to show people what you can do.

If it's possible, it would probably be best to customize a girl or two to sell on etsy or ebay... to get feedback from the buyer, as well as to get an idea on what price range is reasonable to charge.

Or customize her and send her out to someone skilled in the art and ask for their honest opinion on your work (they should be willing to do this and send your girl back to you, at the cost of you just paying shipping).

Never offer services you haven't tried first.
It might seem like it should be simple... and turn out to be really hard... as in... "Oh no, I just ruined this person's doll" hard.

Also... try to think of EVERY type of customization you would be willing to offer, and make a price list for it. Also make a list of customizations you are not willing to offer. Keep that list to yourself... but it's a good list to have around, because it's something for the "Someday I'll learn how to do this" page of life XD

Seriously though, taking commissions can be really, really stressful, and really, really time consuming. If people don't like what you've done, they're going to expect you to redo it, for free... so make sure you think about that, and put something about that into your commission sheet as well (most people I know who do commissions are willing to do ONE redo for free, and then the commissioners have to start paying for redos beyond that... because some people really are just insanely picky)

Also, consider that this will take a lot of time. Is it worth it, the amount of time it will take... because it will take a lot of time away from video making and clothes making and such.

(if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me... I can answer them to the best of my ability, or direct you to other really awesome faceup artists I know who can give you good advice!
